About Promethium

From a Super Bowl dinner bet to a full-season league

Promethium didn’t start as a business plan. It started as a bet between a father and son.

Six years ago, my dad and I were looking for a way to make the Super Bowl more interesting — especially in the years we didn’t much care who was playing. So we made a deal: we’d each draft a fantasy team out of that one game, loser buys dinner. Simple as that. It worked. Suddenly even a lopsided blowout had something riding on it, and we had a genuinely great time doing it. We liked the rules so much that, years later, they’re still basically unchanged — the same draft format that decided a dinner bill now anchors our very first full season league.

Why we built it

For years, this stayed a friendly competition between my father and me. That changed with a conversation at a bar. I told a friend about our little ritual, and he didn’t just think it was fun — he wanted in, and he wanted to know how he could run his own. That was the push I needed. We decided it was worth building for real, so I set out to turn a scrappy spreadsheet habit into an actual product. It took a lot longer than I expected, and I learned more than I bargained for — but that’s exactly what made it fun.

What's next

Now Promethium is live, our first annual league is underway, and we’re having a blast watching everyone bring their own strategy to a format we used to run by hand. We’re only a few weeks in, and already it’s clear this is bigger than one Super Bowl bet. We’re excited to see where it goes from here.

Promethium is run by Promethium Fantasy LLC. Questions or feedback are always welcome.
